i love podcasts because they are subscription based, on-demand, interesting mono or multi-homed conversations containing what i want to listen to, when i want to listen and how i want to listen...
i use them to fill voids: commuting to work on a train, walking through nyc streets, driving to stratton, flying, standing in line, sitting in the stands watching one of my son's teams play, etc...
i know, normally a child's sporting event would not be an appropriate void for podcasting to fill - but both my teens have been sidelined w/ broken bones recently, so while i have gone to games to watch their football and hockey teams play - i haven't been actually watching "them" - thus, podcasts are a totally appropriate multitask, boredom eliminator - as well as painkiller...
it is painful to watch a teenager watch his team instead of play - and you can only comment once or twice on how well they're getting around on their crutches, before it gets old ;)
back to voids: i do also think podcasting of video will join audio very soon - numerous folks like eric and jay are already expanding the envelope...
i have always assumed that at some point - when i have something itching to be said or shown via my personal voice - on my personal blog, that i would join the ranks of those podcasting as well as podcatching...
but for now i listen, watch, read, post, trackback, comment & collaborate - which is enjoyable & works fine for me...
but, i also try to help my two yuts see the blogging/podcasting light - and they've both shown a desire to podcast, each having what i think is an interesting theme to what they want to talk about - which should do a small part to help fill the void that exists for teenage podcatchers...
btw - matt is definitely at the front of teen podcasting - but frankly, his podcasts are aimed at an older demographic than his chronological age - that is a compliment matt ;)
if there were scouts and agents for the blogoshere & podosphere like there are for the sports community - matt is definitely a hot prospect that some smart franchise would sign early to a letter of intent...
anyway, on the broader podcast landscape - the nsfw label probably needs to be synonymous w/ "not safe for teens" for now too ;)
not advocating a rating system - just stating the obvious, while i thought dnds having sex "live" on their podcast was hysterical - i wouldn't want my teens listening to that either...
you try having the conversation w/ your teenager on why dawn was so upset w/ drew - i'll save that void for later, thank you very much :-p
finally, while i listen to a lot of podcasts, i still thoroughly enjoy audiobooks - they fill the pure escapism void for me...
a recent one that i really liked and highly recommend is jennifer government by max barry...
if you've been following the hughtrain vs lovemarks thread, this cyberpunk-ish story of branding gone wrong will appeal to you...
what snowcrash did to creatively morph early cyberspace into the metaverse - jennifer goverment does to expose what lovemarks w/out boundaries would bring us to...
i, like hugh, have a background in advertising, though mine isn't on the marketing side - rather on the technology side...
i could definitely see the concepts leveraged in jennifer government coming out of some marketoids i've met over the years...

I'm a PRbot. Lovemarks gives me the willies. Must check out Jennifer Government....
