hit-driven industry's generational gap

i could have titled this "for love or money" just as easily...

i'm sitting up in boston @ sandbox, a symposium associated w/ siggraph - listening with sean to papers being presented and panels full of game industry subject matter experts...

being involved in interactive development related industries (games, itv, web, mobile) has made up a portion of my career, almost always associated within what are considered hit-driven business models...

so shepherding my teenager, who's looking to enter the game industry as a designer at some point after getting the right college education, has been interesting from a visiting colleges standpoint and then from coming to an industry conference as one more way he can gain knowledge...

but industry conferences do have a dark side - he has had to listen to a few cynical bitter aging dooms-day industry types as well as a whole bunch of positive, please come to our school because we're the best at this higher education institutional types - so he'll need to decide which side to pay more attention to...

i think that this is the dilemma of all hit-driven mass market industries - a high percentage of the folks that have the staying power and experience in the industry are burdened w/ the p&l aspects of the business model and seem to forget why they got into it in the first place - because they had a talent and wanted to create something w/ it, so in the beginning they were lucky enough to be getting paid to do what they loved, but overtime they lost that original joy and developed a jaded view of their world...

the good news is that there are a ton of kids looking to get into the industry - who are starting to either create or extend games for the love of it, without really needing any involvement from the big industry types at all - their careers will come later, and maybe they'll even create "a hit" but for now they're in it for the love, and are loving it no matter what the cynics say...
