"Growing the Talent Pool Becomes an Industry Imperative: Although there have been numerous stories written about the war for talent in the digital space -- and we all agree it's one of the most important challenges in our industry today -- we've done little to grow the talent pool. Instead, we focus on poaching each other's best and brightest, driving up turnover and labor costs. Not too smart. We need to work together as an industry (hello, IAB!) to encourage universities to offer digital marketing courses, even digital marketing degrees. And we need to work harder to attract talent from traditional advertising into our digital space then coach, train, and mentor them in what makes our space different and unique."
this article from mark kingdon of organic (i still add the "online" - i can't help it since i first started working w/ them in '94) came out last month, and i meant to comment on it at the time but then it finally started to snow up in vermont (boarding has priority over blogging)...
mark provides some pretty thoughtful predictions for 2007, really they're more like advice - the talent pool one that i quote above especially resonated w/ me...
throughout my career i've been thrust into positions that required me to both lead during times of change as well as insure that then the change enacted is sustainable as it becomes the norm...
the talent available is always the key, both for initial change followed then by sustainment - yet they each require different skillsets. change is about managed strategic risk and sustainment is about predictable tacticality (not a word really but it should be - practically tactical is what i mean)...
in digital media technologies, its a constant challenge to balance between the two since change is constant and sustainment is necessary to allow for an extensible platform that can accommodate pending change...
as the media world continues to grow and incorporate emerging media and networked potentials that constantly involve massive change while still sustaining existing channels, the talent pool we depend on needs to be able to focus on both aspects for success and progress to occur - the days of the silo'd and static technology practices that we all know exist inside large traditional media entities are long gone, though some days it does seem like certain folks just didn't get the memo ;)
